The Fish of Maui by Georgia

One day Maui wanted his Grandma's jawbone. "Give me your jawbone," he said to his Grandma.

"I will use it to fish up the fish of Maui," he said. "Good," said Grandma.

So Maui went fishing to fish up the big fish of Maui.

"I have got him so we will get lots of fish all year," shouted Maui.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter

On Wednesday 1st April Team 20 visited the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. It was very interesting and we were able to talk to Rick and Andy. They told us all about their job which sounded very exciting. We were able to ask lots of questions.

Do rescue workers get hurt or injured?
Yes but hopefully not often!

Has anyone left and changed their job from working here?
Yes they change jobs and leave because it is a very stressful and noisy job.

Do you have a flying ambulance plane here?
There is a flying ambulance, it isn’t here it is over closer to the airport in the flying ambulance hangar.

How fast does the helicopter go?
The helicopters speed is 120KTS or 200km/per hour

Have you used the helicopter to help at a fire?
Yes there is a big monsoon bucket in the hangar which we hook onto the helicopter. It holds 1000 litres of water.

Have you saved anyone before? Has anyone died in an emergency that you have been to?
We have saved lots of people but people have died too, it is a very sad part of our job.

How did you learn to do this job?
We go to University for 3 years and then we work on the ambulance for 10 years before we can work here.

Where do you keep all your special gear?
In special places inside the helicopter, there is not much room in the helicopter.

What fuel does the helicopter use?
Jet A1, which is like kerosene.

How high does the helicopter go?
10,000 feet

Do you wear a special uniform?
We have a special flight suit that is red and fire proof. We have another special suit for when we do sea rescues.

Has the helicopter been damaged?
Yes, only a few weeks ago some birds flew into the helicopter and damaged it. We were on the way to Mt Cook.

How do you save people?
We fly to them and use bandages and medicine to make them feel better and then fly them to the hospital.

Do you feel like a hero?
Anyone who helps other people is a hero.

Other interesting pieces of information
The cost to replace the helicopter is $7million
The cost to run the helicopter for one hour is $3500
The helmet cost $3000
It takes the helicopter 12 minutes to get to Akaroa and 40 minutes to get to Greymouth.
Auckland. Wellington and Christchurch all have red helicopters but Dunedin has a black helicopter.
The area covered by the Chch helicopter is from Waitaki to half way between Kaikoura and Blenheim and off shore areas too.

A very big thank you to Di, Deb, Chris, Kerry and Shelley who helped out on the trip by providing transport.

Lucy at the hospital with Ruby!

On Thursday I went to the Southern Cross and I had my blocked gland (tooken) taken out. I went to sleep on a stretcher. When I woke up I was GRUMPY!!! I was asleep on my Mummy's lap. When I got there I felt sick. By Lucy

(Lucy dictated this story to Mel while still in hospital because she had a lure in ther right hand which meant she could not write herself. She told the nurse that she knew all about lures because Clara's Mum is a Nurse and she told Team20 all about them - great timing Clara's Mum! )

Acrostic Poetry

After our cross country practise we learnt about acrostic poetry. An acrostic poem is when the word goes down the side of the page. Our challenge was to write an acrostic poem that included simile and related to one of the heroes we've learnt about recently.

Writing an acrostic poem with simile was quite challenging. We hope to be able to share our acrostic poems with you soon!

Wow - a Policeman at School

On Tuesday a police car drove right up to our classroom door!
Scott came inside and talked to us about being a police man. He said he wasn't a hero but we still think he is. Police Officers are heroes because they look after us and help us stay safe.

Here are the answers to the questions we asked Scott.

How did you learn to do your job?
You have to go to a school to learn to be a police officer. It is a police college and you go there for 6 months. You learn to be fit and about the law, you then learn on the job for two years.

Has anyone left and changed their job ?
Lots of people become policeman. Some people do it for a short while and then go and do something. You learn lots of different skills when you are a policeman.

Have you ever had to use a helicopter or ambulance as part of your work?
We sometimes have to help the ambulance and fire fighters if they needs us at their job.

Where do you keep all your special things that are needed in your job?
We need lots of special things but most of our things are on our belt. We use the pen mostly to write things down.

What tools do you use for your job?
Handcuffs
Baton – it looked like a light sabre
Pepper spray
Radio - to let our friends know where we are.
Pen and notebook

Why do you do your job? Do you like it?
It changes all the time and I don’t know what I am going to do from one minute to the next. One day I was in court and then in the afternoon I was in a helicopter.

Have you saved anyone before?
No I don’t think I have saved anyone.

Is it hard to do your job?
Sometimes it is hard, sometimes if people don’t want the police to be involved.

Do you feel like a hero?
No. We don’t because we love our job and we enjoy helping others.

Other questions some of us wanted to ask...
Why do you have a walkie talkie?
So we can talk to people
Can a policeman be a baddy?
We have 10000 people in the police and a few will not be good people.
Do Police have guns?
The AOS Armed Offender Squad have guns. These are special policeman with special training that are able to use guns.

Other interesting bits of information.
Normally Scott looks for clues and doesn’t wear a uniform. He is a Detective.
Every person in the whole world has a different finger print. This is a clue they can leave behind when they do something wrong. When people touch things they leave a finger print behind.
Scott looks for people that have done things. We can also test skin or hair that is left behind, we can talk to people who have seen things to find information.
